What utilities are marked by 811 One Call?

Calling 811 provides a free service to mark public utility lines up to the meter, but it does not cover privately installed lines on a property, which are the owner's responsibility. Private utility locators use technology like GPR and EM induction to find private lines such as electrical lines to pools, water and sewer laterals, irrigation systems, underground storage tanks, telecommunications conduits, and other buried features. These services are essential for homeowners, plumbers, electricians, general contractors, and drilling companies.

What utilities are considered Private?

Private Utilities are the buried lines after the meter or main lines. If you have a curbside meter then your property will not get marked by the participating member utility locators. Other buried utilities that generally are not marked include but may not be limited to: sewer lines, private lighting, sprinklers, fire mains, secondary electric lines to detached garages, and septic lines.

Is a request for a Private Locate free?

No. There will be a service fee for a private locate. The utilites are owned by you and its the owners responsibility to cover the cost to protect private undergound lines.

I found an unmarked buried utility. What should I do?

First contact your state 811 One Call and they will have all the member utilities come and verify who owns the utility. If no member company will mark the found line then it will need to be marked by a private utility locator.
